SPC King was returning from a morning raid on a small nearby village. He was on the final stretch of road about 1 kilometer from Camp Hunte in Kadamiya, Baghdad. An IED detonated in the median of the road sending shrapnel into the left side of the M1026 HMMWV. The IED blew out both of the left side tires, cut the radio antenna cable, cracked the left side windows and cracked both windshields. Two pieces of shrapnel hit SPC King in the face. Another two pieces went into his throat area. SPC King was sitting behind SPC Bertch in the HMMWV. SPC King was later awarded the Purple Heart.
