SGT Bertch was wounded in action on Oct 7th, 2003 by an improvised explosive device (IED). SPC Bertch was returning from a morning raid on a small nearby village. He was on the final stretch of road about 1 kilometer from Camp Hunte in Kadamiya, Baghdad. An IED detonated in the median of the road sending shrapnel into the left side of the M1026 HMMWV. The IED blew out both of the left side tires, cut the radio antenna cable, cracked the left side windows and cracked both windshields. Three pieces of shrapnel hit SPC Bertch in the face. Another piece went into his neck. SGT Bertch continued to drive to Gate 3 of Camp Hunte despite the damage to the HMMWV and the injuries to himself. SGT Bertch was later awarded the Army Commendation Medal & Purple Heart for his dedication and personal courage in getting his truck and crew back to the camp to receive medical aid.
